I wouldn't sweat the knobs not matching the bathroom hardware, but I think the knobs should all coordinate with each other, especially on the same door :. I did this last year on interior and exterior knobs.
It worked really well! All the knobs in the house are still perfect. The exterior lock is the only piece that needs touching up, but that's because we jam a key in it at least twice a day. We totally skipped that, still rocking brass hinges blurgh. Paige - what color did you use? I painted 11 doors and all the hardware, for hardware I used Krylon antique gold cleaned sanded primed and it is coming off everywhere after 2 months. I can see white primer layer on all the knobs. Does your lock still work?
I spray painted my bathroom doorknobs and now the locks won't turn. Looks great!! Even the scratch plates look alright. I sprayed our brass shower door and it's also holding up just fine too I do think the primer is the key!. I never thought about the outside lights!! They were bought as ORB, but have faded from the elements, so I will need to do that!
We also have a similar backdoor, similar water issues. We spray painted door knobs before in our old home. I used spray paint that is meant for metal More coats? I primed and painted my doorknobs in my bathroom. They are the old skeleton key and knob types. I used primer and silver craft paint, then sealed.
They lasted about 5 months before most of the paint was worn off. Never thought of spray painting. Will try that instead. So much cheaper than new doors and knobs!!! I never even thought about spray painting our brass door handles!!!
I think this will be on the to do list in the very near future! Excellent job! Your spray painted knob looks great! I would love to make my home's door knobs black, so maybe I will give this a try! And congrats on becoming a grandmother! I did all mine last year, It sure updates the doors, I also did the hinges, just taped around them with tape and newspaper then sprayed them right on the door frame We have lovely antique brass fixtures, but some are so worn that they can't be polished to an even tone there are pink spots, which I believe are where one most of the zinc has been removed from the brass alloy, leaving behind mainly copper.
So… I did a test run with the knobs on the door from the kitchen to the basement. I sprayed them with gold spray paint in an attempt to get an antique bronze color. They looked okay not as nice as our real brass knobs , but we use that door multiple times a day, so after about months, it's starting to show wear and the paint has worn off in a few places. At least I tried. My mom did all of her knobs and hinges in their old house.
They knew they wouldn't be staying permanently, as they were downsizing in the future, but they held up for many years that they lived there. And yes, Home Depot can rekey new locks to your existing keys we had all of our new locks done Oh, and even the high end ORB fixtures will patina with use after awhile, so the underlying brass does come through a bit.
We just chalk it up to character! They look fantastic and I would venture to say they will even with a few scratches down the line. I spray painted our front door handle about a year ago and the inside circle handle, like yours, has completely chipped off. I just sprayed my door handles with Rustoleum ORB with the built in primer I did my kitchen cabinet handles almost 2 years ago and they are holding up fine I just sanded my door handles and then painted I've never tried spray painting doorknobs, but we did replace every single doorknob when we bought our house.
We wanted knobs instead of levers harder for toddlers to open and that wasn't an option when we built our house. We got our garage door and our front door re-keyed to match each other. Both doorknobs came with a pair of keys each and it was free to have Lowe's re-key one since we bought the doorknobs there.
They even gave us 2 more keys free to match the doorknob he'd re-keyed. Just FYI in case your paint job doesn't stick long term. I've heard it going either way, too. Good luck! I've been dying to try this since YHL did What do I live in, Let's Make a Deal?!?!
I spray painted my door knobs in the spring in a brushed satin nickel. Just the kitchen door so far, but it looks like brand new and has held up perfectly so far. Even the one that is outside. I plan to do the rest of the door knobs too, as I paint the doors. A few years ago, I had my husband take every door knob off of every door in our house so I could spray paint them.
I couldn't stand looking at that fake brass finish one more minute! I used a multi surface Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint with a hammered finish. They came out great and much cheaper than buying all new knobs. Anyway, years later they have held up very well! The only one I might have to touch up a little is the one on my son's bedroom door. Go figure. My co-worker just de-brassified her house. She used an automotive primer and everything looks great!!! Plus, every doorknod in our house is brass and I hate them.
Sherry, You have inspired me. I just ORB spray painted old lawn furniture. My grandma gave it to me because basically none of the other cousins wanted peeling off-white half rusted lawn furniture but I saw them for the beauties that they were wroght iron! I am about to be unemployed for hopefully only a month or less and I just told my best friend to watch out because I was morphing into one part martha stewart and one part sherry petersik for the next month.
But anyhow, just wanted to let you know that the lawn furniture looks awesome. Thanks to you and your inspiration.
I think if you combined me and Martha it might make the world start spinning the other way or something. There would be an internal ironing vs. Love the re-do. Sometimes lately it seems like all these puns and attempts to be clever and funny are really over the top. Dorks for life. Hey guys! My son was born in May with a congenital heart defect, and has been in the hospital ever since.
So, your craziness is some of the only humor I get every day! Know that you bring happiness to some folks every day. Aw thanks so much Ashley! Especially the little man! Maybe he checks in mid-day, not first thing in the AM. You guys inspired us with the ORB spray paint. Looks sooo much better. I spray painted all the hinges at my old house to match the new iron style handles.
Too expensive to buy new hinges. Costly to replace doors since I want to move from the ugly fake wood look hollow core to solid doors. I used steel wool to remove some of the imperfections on my hardware when painting it. Probably better than sandpaper. Gets the loose stuff off. I never thought about the hinges! Did you have to take them off the doors?
Or did you do them also? Seriously, what a great little afternoon DIY fix. But now I see that it is possible to paint them! The spray painted handles look so much better! Please keep us updated on the durability of it, please? In fact it says so right on the can and I mentioned it not once, but twice in this post.
Your email address will not be published. How you like them handles? The hardware on our sliding doors in the living room looked like this: Le yikes, right? We stripped the hardware off of both of the sliding doors in about five minutes I took one side while John got the other one by just unscrewing things on the front, back, and side to free them with a regular old philips head screwdriver… … and then we removed the doorknob and the rusty old door knocker on the front door also with a screwdriver — there were exposed screws that we just removed from the back.
Oh and see that key? Like this… … and this: About an hour later I probably waited 20 minutes between each of my three thin and even coats, just to be sure it was nice and cured before piling more on I was left with these beauties: Who sees a winking face?
Just me? The Office Madness Begins…. Anatomy Of An Ikea Visit. Comments Love it! Me too! Before I read the text I rhought she did it on purpose. Thanks for the idea ;-D. Love it as usual. So much fun to look in on from the dining room… xo, s. Walrus noises and Jazz hands. You could also try very fine steel wool.
It would rough up the finish without leaving scratches. Oh yeah, my friend just bought 8 cans. I better start hoarding!
Oh man, how could I have missed an opportunity to plug my not-catching-on-at-all nickname? Great job! So glad it has held up so well since last summer! Oh yeah- good point! It might actually be less trouble to remove them in the end… xo, s.
Ooh that sounds like a fun science experiment. Me neither. Haha ; xo. Haha, I think he might draw the line at VPL though. Tell Walrus that Delish John says hi. I legitimately have absolutely zero idea what VPL is. Just curious…. Nice work! What a difference the black makes! And I totally think Matt Damon reads your blog :. Haha, that would probably make my brain explode. How could I have missed it if it was mentioned so many time? Newer Comments ».

You absolutely need to prime them with automotive primer. But 2 years later, all of the others look as good as they did when they were first painted! You can absolutely use this same process to spray paint door handles. Just follow the instructions above for paingint door knobs but with one tiny change.
When you go to prime and also spray paint the door knobs, you need to lay them face down at first. Spray them at intervals of minutes until the underside of the handle is covered. Then, carefully flip them over and continue spraying light coats until the handles are cover with paint. If you want extra protection for your door hardwares you can spray on a top coat within 24 hours after the last paint coat.
This might be helpful where you get a lot of moisture like a bathroom door. I recommend this Rustoleum Clear Coat click here for the current price. Most of the hardware on our doors is metal with a synthetic brass coating.
However, someone asked me if you can paint brass hardware. You can absolutely use this same process for refinishing brass doorknobs but I would still buy new hinges.
You can spray paint door knobs in any metallic color you choose. They look great in a brushed nickel finish or even gold. I asked this same question when refinishing my door hardware and it is really up to you. There is no hard and fast rule that door knobs should match hinges but it does look nice. Some door hinges are hardly noticeable so you might choose to leave those and replace the ones that are more noticeable.
Just bite the bullet and replace them with new. Fortunately, they are cheap with the link above! Someone asked me if they could chalk paint hardware. Then spray paint the cabinet knobs with a clear matte sealant or some other spray-on clear coat. A reader asked about other colors instead of just oil-rubbed bronze. Particularly she was wondering about changing shiny brass or gold door knobs to silver.
Just follow the same process above but with a gray automotive primer like this one and the silver spray paint. You can get it here: Rustoleum Metallics Matte Silver.
Now that you know the best process to ensure your hardware finish outlasts your house, go grab a screwdriver and start removing those old brass door handles and doorknobs!

All of our handles and hinges are brass and I am so excited to changing that. Though currently my plan of action includes a clear topcoat because I have kids and want the extra layer of peotection. Thank you so much for your comment Lanae. Yes, and a clear coat of top coat will definitely not hurt! Thank you again!!! You suggested to leave the doorknobs to dry for a few days before re-installing them. I want to do my front door, but I obviously cant leave that off for more than a few hours.
What is your suggestion? The three days is really for the spray paint to reach max hardness. I think they would be fine to paint in the morning and maybe reinstall them in the evening. I would just be gentle with them for a few days. Thank you Jenn! Just came across your blog in Pinterest. We bought a house this summer with many more projects to do before it is the sanctuary we desire. It has been a huge stressor. After reading this post, I am excited to save the money and paint our brass door handles but mostly…this was a Devine appointment.

You might still sand them slightly as I mention in the post. Let me know if you have any questions — Karin. Thank you so much for this post, very helpful! Quick question — what color primer did you use? Sarah — Thank you so much for making me aware. I updated the link. Really any black or dark gray automotive primer will work!

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks JT! Hey there! I do have a question about spray painting doorknobs with locks — it seems to me that the spray paint would make the lock stick.
So on those I just bought new knobs with locks in oil-rubbed bronze. I hope this helps! Thanks Jessica!
