So my fuge is getting pretty nasty. Lots of hair algae growing from the sand and on all the walls. Should I clean it up? Or just leave it be. MY chaeto still grows real well. I cut it back every couple weeks. Now I notice some algae floating on the top of the water.
With all the knowledge from Algae Barn, it can be done! I never thought of having snails in the refugium but I think that I will add some besides the pods.
Will have to boost the crew! I will have to try some snails in the refugium and see if they help along with getting more for the tank. Excellent ideas. Will try snails and peppermint shrimp in my refugium. Just built a sump for my new setup and will be adding some of these in the future thanks for the info. The biggest issue I have with my clean up crew is snail poop it builds up so fast and is super ugly in a flat bottom tank.
Great article! It is very challenging to keep refugium clean! I definitely need to add more pods and snails. Complete ecosystems always interested me, especially the jar terrariums.
Clean up crews are absolutely essential for any saltwater tank. In any tank build-up, I start with the clean up crew and work my way up. I had an urchin in my refugium for a while. My macro algae still had to be trimmed up frequently. I think it liked the coralline algae covering the sump more. I have spent a lot of time researching what is best to use and it seems much more beneficial to the system than.
Suggestions for clean up crew for a gallon reef aquarium and a gallon fish only aquarium and a 45 gallon seahorse aquarium. This minimized the amount of equipment needed to maintain your tank giving it a more natural look. Ken Feldman Jon E. Shimek, Ph. All times are GMT The time now is PM.

I'd leave the polyps and such alone. You can also vacuum the bottom to get out any dirt. Doing all this will hurt to pod population to some extent, but they will grow back. Maybe when you get it cleaned out, You could grow Chaetomorpha in there to benefit your tank. The pod population will multiply back as they seem to love living in the chaeto. Makes me slow to want to trim the chaeto back because of all the pods I see crawling about in it.
Looks like it's going to be a chore, for sure take it off-line until you get the bad stuff out. Thanks for the replies! Diana that was my original plan, bare refugium with chaeto. I designed it to run a lot of flow thru it.
But I had too much rock , couldn't find just the right place for it in the display so I put it in the refugium until It's been in there ever since! Dave is right I gotta get the crud out of the bottom.
If I put any meaningful flow thru it I get a bunch of debris drifting around in the display. I'm determined to rid the excess nutrients from this system in my efforts to get a handle on the bubble so It must be done. A thorough cleaning is going to effect the entire system.
